Every great brand has a story and ours didn’t start in a corporate boardroom or with a focus group. It started back in 2019. We wanted to create a protective coating that could genuinely stand up to the elements – something that could protect the hard-earned patina of a favorite carbon steel knife, save that heirloom vintage axe from pitting and keep all your steels, composites, kydex, wood and leather maintained while looking great for years to come.

The Science of “Grumpy”

We aren’t Grumpy as the name implies, but we are incredibly particular. We didn’t want to use harsh, non-food safe chemicals, or obnoxious scents in our products. We absolutely refused to use oils that would go RANCID or crust up over time.

We went to work handcrafting a formula built on pure, time-tested, and stable ingredients like California beeswax and USP-grade mineral oil which are clearly listed on our labels. The formula needed to be completely food-safe, long lasting, incredibly durable, and easy to apply. To prove it worked, we put our formulas through stringent testing. From the 1 to 3-year long-term storage test, outdoor testing through all seasons, and one brutal gauntlet where we submerged a Grumpy’s coated 1095 carbon steel piece in saltwater for 48 hours and then 48 more hours of continuous saltwater spraying – our wax stood tall and the steel was protected!

While our legendary durability tests helped us lock in our exact formulas, our roots run back to 2019. From day one, our mission has been to honor the tools that work hard. Every single tin of Grumpy’s Blade Butter is handmade in small batches. Our small, dedicated crew of knife nuts make, label and seal the tins of Grumpy’s right here in the USA. Our quality shows with the ingredients clearly listed on the labels and nothing is hidden. We put the hours in the shop so that you can spend less time worrying about if your tools are safe and protected.
